MINUTES FOR JANUARY 13, 2022

 

Members present: Jim Buckner, Keith Edwards, Eddie Upshaw, Susan Shaw, Brian Joyce, and Danielle Montgomery-Director. 

 

Chairman Buckner called meeting to order at 8:33 am.

 

Swearing in of new members Susan Hays and returning member Brian Joyce was cancelled since the Probate Office was unable to attend.

 

Keith Edwards made a motion to keep the Board structure until new and returning member Brian Joyce could be sworn in. Eddie Upshaw seconded the motion which was then approved unanimously.

 

Chair made a motion to keep Brian Joyce as Secretary until new members could be sworn in, seconded by Eddie Upshaw, and unanimously approved.

 

Motion to approve minutes from December meeting was made by Chair and seconded by Keith Edwards. Motion carried, and minutes were officially approved.

 

Danielle reported the decision was made to not purchase the ArcView geographic aid in redistricting. Danielle explained progress made in redistricting, reporting biggest change is in Lafayette precinct which is now majority in House District 1 instead of 2, and majority of Chickamauga precinct in House District 2 instead of 1. Most other precincts received no or minor changes. All redistricting of all precincts must be completed by February 18. The state will send new voter precinct cards for the Elections office to mail. Chair and members thanked Danielle for her diligence is staying ahead of schedule.

 

Danielle reported she and Chuck would attend the Marietta training session on February 9.

 

Danielle reported on the upcoming GAVREO meeting in Athens on March 20-23, asking Board members their plans on attending. Members Chair Jim Buckner and Eddie Upshaw planning to attend.

 

Recently deceased voters names were read by Chairman Buckner who made a motion that these names, 12 in total, be permanently removed from the county voter list. Keith Edwards seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

 

Chair Buckner discussed the new audit requirement for all November elections. The Chair reported on new legislation that has been introduced that would affect the elections process and Election’s office workload. A suggestion was agreed upon to have the Chair ask our legislative representatives to attend our monthly meetings with updates on legislation affecting elections.

 

Danielle explained the changes to the Absentee Ballot process. Eddie Upshaw recommended posting the new requirements on the Board Facebook page.

 

Brian Joyce asked if there was any movement on the School Board district changes and Danielle and the Chair mentioned the School Board is not interested, but a member of the public plans to gather petitions to make encourage changes to the School Board elections process and districts.

 

With no further discussion or business on the agenda, Keith Edwards made the motion to adjourn the meeting, which was seconded by the Chair and the motion approved unanimously.

 

With no further pending business, Keith Edwards moved to adjourn, and Jim Buckner seconded, passing unanimously and meeting was adjourned at 9:30 am.
